Trump 2021 Budget: If Senate Republicans Really Want to Help the American People, We Have a Few Ideas

Washington, D.C. — President Trump’s 2021 budget proposal lays bare the Republican agenda in which his administration is failing to invest in infrastructure and health care, and seeks to deny  our seniors the benefits they’ve earned.

This irresponsible and dangerous budget is confirmation that the Trump Administration and Capitol Hill Republicans are dedicated to an agenda that severely undermines Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security while cutting taxes for the wealthy and powerful special interests.

“Make no mistake, this budget is the Republican agenda in 2020 — in the White House, the Senate, and the U.S. House,” said Joshua Karp of Fix Our Senate. “For the third year in a row, the Trump Administration has made massive cuts to Medicare and Social Security the centerpiece of his policy agenda, programs millions of Americans depend on and have worked a lifetime to earn.

While the Senate stalls on Trump’s budget, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell continues to block over 300 good bills that would actually improve health care for millions of Americans.

  • H.R. 3, the Lower Drug Costs Now Act would allow Medicare to negotiate with drug companies and bring down out of pocket costs for prescription drugs for families and seniors trying to make ends meet.

  • H.R. 8, which would require universal background checks on all firearm sales and close the gun show loophole — a measure over 90% of Americans support, including 90% of gun owners.

  • The Violence Against Women Act remains stalled and unauthorized for months, even though it passed the House with bipartisan support and provides critical support and services to survivors of domestic assault, law enforcement, and healthcare providers.

There are hundreds of bills passed by the House that will tangibly and substantially improve people’s lives, make them safer, and better connect them to critical healthcare and services in every corner of the country.

So today, while the President and Capitol Hill Republicans present his budget today, remember: while Trump’s touting an agenda to harm millions, Mitch McConnell is shoving bills to help millions into his desk drawer. If McConnell actually wanted to help the American people, he would oppose the Trump budget and end the Senate graveyard of bills.
