Fix Our Senate: "We need President Biden to step up and make it clear that voting rights are essential, partisan gerrymandering is unacceptable, and the Senate can’t protect the outdated and abused filibuster at the expense of our democracy.”

JULY: 90 Advocacy Groups to Senate Democrats: Hold Another Vote on Voting Rights, Don’t Let Filibuster Block Will of Majority

Washington, DC – Today, Fix Our Senate released the following statement from spokesman Eli Zupnick after Senate Republicans once again blocked voting rights and democracy-protecting legislation before senators left for recess.

"It is deeply disappointing that Senate Democrats left town without addressing the outdated and abused filibuster that stands in the way of critically-needed legislation to protect our democracy. Today’s vote made it clear once again that a majority of Senators support strong voting rights and democracy-protecting bills and that the filibuster is the only obstacle left standing in the way.

We are hopeful that senators will listen to their constituents and quickly return to DC with a plan to finally eliminate the filibuster to address voter suppression and partisan gerrymandering before it’s too late. Time is running out to protect voters in the upcoming election and prevent the House from being rigged for the next decade.

Attacks on our democracy can’t simply be ‘out-organized’ and we need President Biden to step up and make it clear that voting rights are essential, partisan gerrymandering is unacceptable, and the Senate can’t protect the outdated and abused filibuster at the expense of our democracy.”
