Report Details How McConnell’s Corrupt Senate Has “Taken A Wrecking Ball To A Century Of Bipartisan Senate Norms”
Washington, D.C. — A new report from the Senate Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC) reveals how Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Republicans, and their special interest donors have engaged in a years-long scheme to pack the federal judiciary with corporate-friendly judges.
“In Mitch McConnell’s corrupt Senate, he and Senate Republicans have done everything in their power to to use the federal courts to force an agenda that benefits their big corporate donors — while obstructing hundreds of bills that would help regular Americans,” said Joshua Karp of Fix Our Senate. “Rather than focus on improving the lives of the American people, McConnell has focused on confirming far-right judges who want to repeal the Affordable Care Act and give wealthy special interests free reign to pollute our environment, flood elections with dark money, and suppress minority voters to protect his position as majority leader and advance his agenda of corruption."
Highlights from the devastating DPCC report:
- “Mitch McConnell’s inside game… Under his leadership, Senate Republicans have taken a wrecking ball to a century of bipartisan Senate norms.”
- “For McConnell-led Senate Republicans, confirming Trump judges has become the primary purpose of the Senate. The Democratic majority in the House has passed over 350 bills that have yet to even be considered by the Senate.”
- "Working hand-in-hand with the administration and anonymously-funded outside groups, the Senate has confirmed 200 new life-tenured federal judges to aggressively remake the federal courts and rewrite the Constitution. Most of these judges were chosen not for their qualifications or experience—which are often lacking—but for their demonstrated allegiance to Republican Party political goals."
- “Judges have already begun rolling back the clock on civil rights, consumer protections, and the rights of ordinary Americans, reliably putting a thumb on the scale in favor of corporate and Republican political interests.”
- “With a captured judiciary, the Republican Party can do its donors’ dirty work through the courts without fear of electoral consequences. This is anti-democratic and fundamentally un-American.”
- “Under Chief Justice Roberts, the Court’s Republican-appointed five-justice majority handed down 80 partisan 5-4 decisions — joined by no Democratic appointee — that delivered wins to the Republican Party and the big corporate interests behind it.”
