Washington, D.C. — Late yesterday, Republican Senators left little doubt through their actions that this impeachment cover up isn’t just a blatant defense of President Trump — it’s also blatantly self-serving.
After the President’s defense team wrapped up their arguments, the Wall Street Journal reported that Senators raised objections to hearing witnesses for fear that a longer impeachment trial would shine a light on their unwillingness to be impartial jurors — which is already causing their constituents back home to turn against them.
“At a meeting of all Republican senators late Tuesday,” the Journal reported, “Sens. Cory Gardner of Colorado, Martha McSally of Arizona and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who face competitive races in the fall, addressed their colleagues in the meeting” and made the case that a full and fair trial would result in “more Democratic attacks.”
Now, although a majority of Americans support allowing witnesses to testify, Mitch McConnell is “scrambling” to block witnesses and avoid putting his Senate Republican majority on the spot — so he can continue his obstruction and pursuing his and special interest agenda.
"Majority Leader McConnell has never been in search of the facts in this trial — this is just the latest in a long line of self-serving power grabs that McConnell has perpetrated. He and his enablers pay lip service to ‘process’ and ‘fairness’ but, when it matters most — from passing a tax bill that overwhelmingly favors the wealthy to this impeachment coverup — Leader McConnell always gets what he wants from his members,” said Joshua Karp of Fix Our Senate.
Fix Our Senate will be urging Americans to call the Majority Leader’s office at (202) 224-2541: Mitch McConnell needs to listen to the majority of Americans who demand a fair and open impeachment trial.
