Republicans and Corporations Get Rich. Americans Get Sick.

GOP Senators Sold Stock While The Senate Ignored Growing Pandemic

Washington, D.C. —  Just when you thought Mitch McConnell’s Republican Majority couldn’t sink any lower, it does.

FIRST: Republican Senators received non-public information about the coronavirus in January and February, but they publicly continued to boast about the strength of the economy and the government’s preparedness.

THEN: Republican Senators Richard Burr and Kelly Loeffler made large stock sales after receiving non-public information about the coronavirus.

NOW: Senate Republicans yesterday unveiled their plan to bail out huge corporations with tax cuts and cash, while leaving working families to struggle through the crisis.

The Senate Republican plan spends hundreds of billions of dollars bailing out huge corporations while cutting access to health care and paid leave for millions. The plan provides the Trump Administration with an unaccountable $150 billion slush fund to give to their special interest allies, and repeals payroll taxes for big corporations that will only help firms, not workers.

“When Senate Republicans were briefed about coronavirus in January, did they sound the alarm, protect the country and make sure we had adequate testing and protective equipment? No, they made insider trades to profit off the coming panic while publicly pretending everything was fine,” said Joshua Karp of Fix Our Senate. “McConnell’s failed leadership has led exactly where you’d expect: corruption in the face of crisis. As a result, Senate Republicans are yet again turning their backs on the American people by proposing a massive bailout of huge corporations while hurting the working families who are most impacted by this pandemic.”
