FLASHBACK: “McConnell Cave Makes Filibuster Elimination More Likely Than Ever”
Washington, D.C. — Today, Fix Our Senate released the following statement on news that the Senate has finally reached an agreement to pass the routine organizing resolution that will finally allow Democrats to take control of Senate committees, a full two weeks after formally taking over the majority. Because McConnell had threatened to filibuster the resolution and then delayed its movement, Democrats had to ask permission from Republicans before scheduling hearings on President Biden’s nominees, and Republicans were empowered to delay and block them.
"While we applaud Senate Democrats for standing strong against Minority Leader McConnell’s attempt to lock in the filibuster in the Senate’s organizing resolution, his filibuster threat succeeded in blocking Democrats from taking over committees for two full weeks and delayed critical action to advance President Biden’s agenda,” said Eli Zupnick, spokesman for Fix Our Senate. “Now that Sen. McConnell has shown just how far he is willing to go to obstruct and delay anything and everything, Democrats must move quickly to eliminate the filibuster and take away his weapon of partisan obstruction.”
