Today, Fix Our Senate released the following statement after Sen. Mitch McConnell’s announcement that he will be continuing “full steam ahead” with confirmation hearings on Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett despite the fact that three members of the GOP caucus, including two members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, have tested positive for COVID-19 and are in quarantine.
“What we are seeing right now from Sen. McConnell is another perfect example of how broken his Senate is and how critical it is that he not be allowed to continue this dysfunction next year,” said Eli Zupnick, spokesman for Fix Our Senate. “Sen. McConnell’s craven intent to jam an extreme Supreme Court nominee through the Senate before the American people have a chance to weigh in and while COVID-19 rages through his caucus has shined a harsh spotlight on his complete abdication of even any pretense of bipartisanship or preservation of Senate norms. His actions are making it clearer than ever – to Senate Democrats and people across the country – that there’s simply no chance he would be a good-faith partner in the Senate next year and that Senate rules need to be changed to ensure this dysfunction doesn’t continue.”
