Washington, D.C. — Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has a lot on his mind. With so many special interests and corporate donors to appease, sometimes the little things might slip through the cracks. In the case of the latest coronavirus relief package, apparently one of those little things was…all of the small businesses in America.
McConnell was so busy trying to push through his half-trillion dollar slush fund for giant corporations, he left a pittance for small businesses. Now, small businesses across the country are pleading for Congress to do more to help them, and for good reason: America’s 30 million small businesses employ 60 million people, but so far only 250,000 claims have been processed.
True to form, McConnell was so busy worrying about his corporate campaign donors that he stiffed small businesses and their workers. Now, Congress will have to appropriate more money to ensure the program actually works.
“McConnell has always had the backs of his special interest donors rather than working Americans — this is just the latest example of that,” said Joshua Karp of Fix Our Senate. “Small businesses are the employers being hit the hardest by this crisis, but McConnell was so focused on rushing through a secret slush fund for big corporations that he left small businesses behind to fend for themselves.. The next round of relief packages must prioritize workers and small businesses, not wealthy corporations and campaign donors who have McConnell’s ear.”
