Politico: HR1 among bills “DOA in the Senate...may not garner even a single Republican vote, let alone the 10 needed to break a filibuster”
The choice for Senate Democrats: “Protect our democracy and pass the For the People Act with the majority voters handed to them, or protect an outdated and abused ‘Jim Crow’ relic and allow Sen. McConnell to veto this once-in-a-generation opportunity for reform.”
FLASHBACK: President Obama on expanding voting rights, ending partisan gerrymandering: “And if all this takes eliminating the filibuster, another Jim Crow relic, in order to secure the God-given rights of every American, then that’s what we should do”
Washington, DC — Tonight, Fix Our Senate released the following statement on the passage in the House of Representatives of HR1, the For the People Act, with zero Republicans standing with Democrats and the majority of Democrats, Republicans, and independents across the country in support of this critical legislation.
“The House has taken a strong step forward toward protecting voting rights, ending partisan gerrymandering, and strengthening our crumbling democracy – and now it heads to the Senate where it will slam into Sen. McConnell’s filibuster brick wall,” said Eli Zupnick, spokesman for Fix Our Senate. “Senate Democrats will soon face a clear choice: Protect our democracy and pass the For the People Act with the majority voters handed to them, or protect an outdated and abused ‘Jim Crow’ relic and allow Sen. McConnell to veto this once-in-a-generation opportunity for reform.”
