Fix Our Senate Responds to President Obama’s Call to End the Filibuster

Today, President Barack Obama endorsed ending the legislative filibuster in order to make progress on issues of voting rights and equal representation while speaking at the funeral of Congressman John Lewis in Atlanta. In response, Fix Our Senate issued the following statement:

"We applaud President Obama for his call to end the legislative filibuster – ‘a relic of the Jim Crow era.’ That is the way to achieve equal representation and honor Congressman Lewis’ legacy as a founding father of a ‘fuller, fairer, better America.’

For too long, Mitch McConnell and others have used the filibuster to stall civil rights legislation and lock Black and Brown Americans out of our democracy. The way to achieve that ‘fuller, fairer, better America’ is to ensure that the will of the American people is done — not the will of a few bad actors who are greedy for power. We cannot get there while McConnell and others use the filibuster as a roadblock. We hope other leaders heed President Obama’s call and embrace solutions proportionate to the problems they aim to solve — starting with ending the legislative filibuster and giving power back to the American people.”
