Fix Our Senate: “We’re at the moment of truth and we’re running out of time: will Democrats continue to allow a minority of Republicans to abuse the filibuster to block voting rights and democracy-protecting legislation, or will they finally address this outdated and abused ‘Jim Crow relic’?”
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Senate Republicans filibustered the Freedom to Vote Act – the third time Sen. McConnell has abused the filibuster to prevent the Senate from even having a debate on critical democracy-protecting legislation. The legislation, drafted in close partnership with Sen. Manchin, would protect voting rights, ban partisan gerrymandering, and safeguard our democracy.
Eli Zupnick, spokesperson for Fix Our Senate, issued the following statement:
“There was never any doubt that today’s vote would result in the third Republican filibuster of voting rights legislation. Unfortunately, there is still a doubt regarding what Democrats will do about it.
“We’re at the moment of truth and we’re running out of time: will Democrats continue to allow a minority of Republicans to abuse the filibuster to block voting rights and democracy-protecting legislation, or will they finally address this outdated and abused ‘Jim Crow relic’?
“If Democrats tackle the filibuster, they can deliver on their promises and take steps to restore and protect our democracy. Otherwise, the next year will be mired in legislative gridlock with Senator McConnell calling the shots and Democrats forced to make excuses to the voters that elected them.
“Their choice will determine not just the legislative outlook for the coming months, but the fate of our democracy for years to come.”
