Eli Zupnick: “...a five alarm fire moment for our democracy. Now, every day that passes without federal legislation—and addressing the filibuster—adds to the danger.”
WASHINGTON, DC — Today’s Census Bureau release of new congressional district-level data will unofficially kick off the redistricting and reapportionment process.
The following is a statement from Eli Zupnick, spokesman for Fix Our Senate:
“Today’s Census release will set off a furious round of partisan gerrymandering that could rig House districts for the next decade. In concert with Republican states’ voter suppression efforts, it’s a five alarm fire moment for our democracy. Now, every day that passes without federal legislation—and addressing the filibuster—adds to the danger.
“It is deeply disappointing that Senate Democrats left for recess without addressing the filibuster. A majority of Senators support legislation to protect voting rights and stop partisan gerrymandering, but the filibuster is standing in the way of their passage. Senate Democrats should quickly return to Washington with a plan to finally eliminate the filibuster as a weapon Sen. Mitch McConnell can use to keep our democracy rigged.
“Time is running out. Attacks on our democracy can’t be ‘out-organized.’ We need President Biden to jump into this fight and push Senate Democrats to pass voting rights legislation before it’s too late.”
