Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell today announced his opposition to legislation that would establish a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
As the Washington Post noted, “McConnell’s opposition makes it more likely that enough Republican senators will band together against the commission legislation to block it from proceeding. The bill will need to garner 60 votes in a 50-50 split Senate to clear a filibuster.”
Eli Zupnick, spokesperson for Fix Our Senate, issued the following statement:
"From the literal attack on our democracy on January 6 to the dozens of Republican voter suppression bills in legislatures across America, there are real and demonstrated threats to our democracy that need urgent action. Yet Sen. Mitch McConnell is hellbent on ensuring our country can’t make progress and the filibuster is his favorite tool of obstruction.
The news that Sen. McConnell is threatening to block the bipartisan January 6 commission is beyond the pale and fits alongside his similar threats to block progress on the For the People Act.
Democrats must move quickly to eliminate the filibuster as a weapon McConnell can use to kill efforts that protect the health of our democracy.”
