"Unless and until Democrats address the filibuster, critically-needed federal voting rights and democracy-protecting legislation will not be signed into law this year.”

WASHINGTON, DC — This afternoon, Republicans filibustered the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, legislation to restore core elements of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that the conservative Supreme Court has gutted.

On the Senate floor before the vote, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) spoke out in favor of the legislation saying, “I will be among those who vote to begin debate on this measure when we have this vote in a few minutes. I will do so because I strongly support and I believe that Congress should enact a bipartisan, reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act."

Eli Zupnick, spokesperson for Fix Our Senate, stated:

“For the fourth time this year, Republicans have filibustered federal voting rights legislation.

“Whether it’s the original version of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, the substitute amendment backed by Senator Murkowski, or other good faith legislative efforts to forge compromise and deliver on federal voting rights legislation, it’s crystal clear that Sen. Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans will weaponize the filibuster to block progress. Our question now to President Biden and Senate Democrats is this: What are you going to do about it?

“Unless and until Democrats address the filibuster, critically-needed federal voting rights and democracy-protecting legislation will not be signed into law this year. It’s time for Senate Democrats to join with President Biden and address the filibuster before it’s too late.”
