Fix Our Senate: “It’s more clear than ever before that Democrats must choose between keeping the ‘Jim Crow’ filibuster intact or delivering on voting rights legislation before it’s too late.”
WASHINGTON, DC — On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate will vote on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, legislation to restore core elements of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that the conservative Supreme Court has gutted.
Eli Zupnick, spokesperson for Fix Our Senate, issued the following statement:
“In 2006, every single Senate Republican voted to extend the Voting Rights Act for 25 additional years. In 2021, we expect almost every single Senate Republican to lock arms in opposition to federal voting rights protections and to filibuster the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
"This will be the fourth Republican filibuster this year of federal voting rights legislation and another in a string of reminders that good faith efforts to forge bipartisan compromise on voting rights have no chance of obtaining meaningful Republican support in Sen. Mitch McConnell’s Senate.
"Thankfully, since the last Republican filibuster of voting rights legislation, President Biden has endorsed filibuster reform and injected renewed momentum and urgency into this effort. It’s more clear than ever before that Democrats must choose between keeping the ‘Jim Crow’ filibuster intact or delivering on voting rights legislation before it’s too late.”
