“This is just the latest example of the absurdity of the Senate filibuster and highlights the need for Senate Democrats to finally eliminate the outdated and abused rule”

WASHINGTON, DC — Following reporting that Senate Majority Leader Schumer and Minority Leader McConnell are considering a temporary suspension of the legislative filibuster in order to raise the debt ceiling, Fix Our Senate spokesperson Eli Zupnick released the following statement:

“These latest debt limit discussions are another reminder that Sen. McConnell is terrified Democrats will reform the abused filibuster and eliminate his ability to obstruct popular legislation. That’s why he folded on the debt ceiling in October and it’s why he’s desperate for a way out again now.

“This is just the latest example of the absurdity of the Senate filibuster and highlights the need for Senate Democrats to finally eliminate the outdated and abused rule – not only to pass this debt limit patch to avoid economic calamity, but to remove the filibuster as a weapon for McConnell to abuse on other essential and popular priorities, like ensuring voting rights and protecting our democracy.

“Whether or not this deal holds, it highlights the thin ice that today’s abused filibuster rests on. To quote Leader Reid from earlier this year, it’s not a matter of if the filibuster will be eliminated, but when.”
