Washington, D.C. — Today, Fix Our Senate released policy principles that must be included in the next relief package passed by Congress.
Due to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the phase three legislation, the CARES Act, prioritized the corporations and special interest groups that make up the donor list for his campaign. The next package that passes through Congress must focus on providing real assistance to families, small businesses, and frontline healthcare workers.
Fix Our Senate has crafted a set of five policy principles that must guide the U.S. Senate’s legislative efforts going forward. These principles lay out a path for the Senate to end the corruption that has become its hallmark and deliver real assistance to the American people.
“Without committing to a coherent set of principles guiding the Senate’s deliberations over the next round of economic rescue and healthcare legislation, the Senate will perform as it almost always does under Majority Leader McConnell — as an ATM for special interests, the well connected, and wealthy corporations,” said Joshua Karp of Fix Our Senate. “The American people — from frontline health care professionals to grocery store employees to the hundreds of millions practicing social distancing — are making difficult sacrifices to protect their neighbors. It is time for the U.S. Senate to step up, meet the moment, and do their part to help them. Not doing so only deepens the wound that the virus and McConnell’s lack of leadership in response to it have caused.
