After the Senate Parliamentarian ruled today that a minimum wage increase cannot be passed through the fast-track budget reconciliation process, Fix Our Senate responded by calling on Senate Democrats to eliminate the filibuster so that popular legislation, like increases to the minimum wage, can pass through the Senate with a simple majority.

"Senate Democrats are forced to jam everything they can into a budget process that protects popular policies from Sen. McConnell’s partisan filibuster, but today’s ruling highlights that this simply isn’t going to be enough,” said Eli Zupnick, spokesman for Fix Our Senate. “President Biden and Leader Schumer are making it clear that they won’t tolerate partisan Republican obstruction on their COVID rescue bill and will pass this major legislation with a simple majority if needed, and there is no reason for them to not take this same approach to increasing the minimum wage, passing HR1 and the Voting Rights Act, and delivering on the many popular promises they made that Sen. McConnell can currently veto with a filibuster.”

Fix Our Senate recently joined more than 60 issue and advocacy organizations, in a letter calling on Majority Leader Schumer to eliminate the filibuster to end Sen. Mitch McConnell and caucus’ ability to continue their gridlock and dysfunction to overturn the will of the voters from the minority.
