Biden Sets Sights on Immigration Reform, But McConnell and the Filibuster Stand in the Way

Today, President Biden and Democratic leaders will introduce a new immigration plan that would, among other things, provide a path to citizenship for over 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States, including DREAMers. In response, Fix Our Senate is calling on Senate Democrats to eliminate the filibuster and get this reform done.

Earlier this month, the group released a letter with more than 60 groups, including immigration reform advocates, calling on Majority Leader Schumer to eliminate the filibuster, saying it “[allows] a partisan minority to block legislation and will prevent the Senate from governing and delivering on the promises they made to voters.”

Republicans blocked President Obama’s DREAM Act in 2013 despite widespread support among voters, and reports say that, “[Activists] are betting that Mr. Biden will struggle even more than his predecessors did to win support from a Republican Party that became more anti-immigrant during the Trump administration.”

"As long as Sen. McConnell has the filibuster, the president’s immigration plan is a wish list, not a policy proposal. The policies in his proposal have bipartisan support across the country, but Sen. McConnell has already shown he will weaponize the Senate filibuster to block every part of the Biden agenda,” said Eli Zupnick, spokesman for Fix Our Senate. “Senate Democrats must eliminate the filibuster so we can break the gridlock that Sen. McConnell wants and take critically-needed steps toward fixing the many crises facing our country.”
