President Joe Biden: “If we have to — if there's complete lockdown and chaos as a consequence of the filibuster, then we'll have to go beyond [a talking filibuster].”

Washington, DC — During his first official press conference as chief executive, President Joe Biden answered numerous questions on the filibuster, and continued to state that it cannot stand in the way of Democrats’ policy agenda. While he had already come out in favor of reinstating the talking filibuster, the President said if that isn’t enough, “we’ll have to go beyond” it. Biden also said that he agrees with President Barack Obama in saying the filibuster is a “Jim Crow relic,” and that it is “being abused in a gigantic way.”

"President Biden has laid out a big, bold, and popular agenda, and it is encouraging to see him make it crystal clear that he will prioritize delivering on his promises over an abused and outdated Senate rule,” said Fix Our Senate Spokesman Eli Zupnick. “Momentum for the elimination of the filibuster grows stronger with every passing day that Republicans refuse to work with Democrats on popular and desperately-needed policies.”
