In a recent piece for the Atlantic, Senator Sherrod Brown made the case for the elimination of the filibuster and made clear that there is broader support for filibuster reform in the next Congress. From Sen. Brown:
“We’ve got to eliminate the filibuster... I don’t know if it has unanimity, but I’ve not talked to anybody that says ‘I don’t want to do it.’ ”
This comes as Senate candidates in Maine, Montana, and North Carolina are suggesting openness to major filibuster reform and President Barack Obama called the parliamentary procedure “a Jim Crow relic” and advocated for its elimination to bolster voting rights.
They’re absolutely right. The filibuster has been weaponized and abused for too long to block progress. To make meaningful progress on the issues that matter most – from COVID-19 to climate change, gun violence, income inequality and much more – we have to move toward a government that responds to the people.
