As the SCOTUS Fight Heats Up, the Fight to Fix the Senate “More Important Than Ever Before”

Today, Fix Our Senate spokesman Eli Zupnick released the following statement on the coalition’s plans and focus for the coming weeks. This follows the release Friday night of a new six-figure ad buy to remind the American people of Sen. McConnell’s hypocritical, reckless pursuit of power at the expense of democracy. McConnell has spent his career breaking the Senate and obstructing the will of the people, and now he is going even further, to create a Trump supermajority on the Supreme Court that would strip health care from millions and erode our rights, freedoms, and democracy.

"A harsh spotlight has been thrown on Sen. McConnell’s lies, hypocrisy, and blatant attacks on our health care, our democracy, and any remaining Senate norms — and the fight to fix his broken Senate has become more important than ever before.

“We will fight as hard as we can to stop this Trump-McConnell’s election-season attack on our democracy, rights, and freedoms. And we’ll make sure that people across the country see how Sen. McConnell has now proven, beyond any possible remaining doubt, that he is willing to violate any norm and break every rule, even his own ‘McConnell Rule,’ to increase his personal power, help his special interest friends, and advance his partisan and ideological interests.

“If McConnell's Republicans jam a Trump nominee through before the voters have a chance to weigh in, then Democrats will have a responsibility to move quickly next year to restore our democracy and reflect the will of the voters. And no matter what, if voters reject the Trump-McConnell agenda and hand power to Democrats in November, Democrats need to move quickly to eliminate the filibuster, end the gridlock and dysfunction, and get to work tackling the crises Trump and McConnell have created and deliver on their promises to the American people.”

Fix Our Senate launched to hold Sen. McConnell accountable for breaking the Senate and weaponizing Senate rules to undermine our democracy and block progress on the issues people care about most — from the climate crisis, to health care, democracy reform, voting rights, gun safety, immigration, and so much more.

If voters hand Democrats control next year, Democrats need to fix the broken Senate by eliminating the filibuster— McConnell’s preferred weapon of partisan obstruction. They have to get to work restoring the democracy he has eroded, fixing the problems he and President Trump have created, and passing popular legislation supported by a majority of senators that would address the many challenges facing our nation.
