Today, as the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments on a New York law that includes strict limitations on carrying a firearm outside of one’s home, Fix Our Senate, a coalition representing 85 organizations and tens of millions of members across the country, highlighted the urgent need for Senate Democrats to eliminate the filibuster as an obstacle to common-sense gun laws.
In October, Brady launched its #TheFilibusterIsKillingUs campaign, with a video featuring the testimony of gun violence survivors calling on the U.S. Senate to eliminate the filibuster to pass needed, live-saving gun violence prevention legislation. The videos can be viewed here.
Christian Heyne, a gun violence survivor and the Vice President of Policy at Brady, a Coalition Member of Fix Our Senate, stated:
“As the U.S. Supreme Court considers New York’s common-sense gun law, it is important to recognize that while a vast majority of Americans support additional life-saving gun laws -- we cannot do so because of the filibuster. Too many Americans are wounded and killed with guns every day in this country due to a corrupted political process that prevents common sense progress from being achieved.
“While we do not know what the court’s decision will ultimately look like, we know that we desperately need life-saving laws. It’s time for Senate Democrats to stand up and work to protect Americans rather than protecting the Jim Crow filibuster.”
